Schmarm ~ or what to do with left over pancakes!

My mother always cooked with a view to having leftovers hence I am not a lover of such. However, the one I do love and so do my children is Schmarm.

Basically, Schmarm is old pancakes (or even just cooked pancakes) cut into squares and fried in roughly equal parts of butter and sugar until candied. It never works out the same for me because I am never sure of the ingredients ratio but the kids always love it! It is delicious with pureed apricots or other fruit for a healthier meal.

Cheerio!

P.S. Schmarm is Mum's name for this. Do you know of any other?

  2. Hello, just wanted to say thank you soooo much for the comment you left on my blog. I was starting to think that I was the only one who was'nt keen on tagging and mass awards! phew!
I think that if you want to give someone an award, then give them one but don't add conditions and rules to it.
I think I'm just getting a bit stroppier in my old age ( I hit the big 4 0 last year!)anyway thanks for the support, it was much appreciated and needed!

  6. Wow, my grandma use to make something like that for me. Sometimes with leftover pancakes and sometimes she used these homemade wide noodles that she made herself.

  11. My great aunt used to cook a dish called Schmarm, but it was more like "scrambled" pancakes with chopped apple bits. This was pancake batter mixed with the apple bits and lightly scrambled on the grill instead of forming it into pancakes. We just loved it!

  12. Kaiserschmarm is an Austrian pancake dessert similar to Dutch babies or German pancakes. The difference is that the Austrian version separates the eggs and beats the white stiff for a fluffier version. What they have in common with yours is that they are cooked in a pan of melted butter and sugar is added. They are not done with leftover, however. They're very good.

  13. I cared for retired nuns that would make the most wonderful dish called schmarm. I don't know where it originated from, but most of the nuns were saved from the war in Germany as little girls. The difference is their sweet pancake battle was poured over cooked spicy sausage chopped up and as she poured the batter she would chop in chunks and flip it all til cooked and served with applesauce. This was 25 yes ago. For some reason tonight I found your blog.
