Schmarm ~ or what to do with left over pancakes!

My mother always cooked with a view to having leftovers hence I am not a lover of such. However, the one I do love and so do my children is Schmarm.

Basically, Schmarm is old pancakes (or even just cooked pancakes) cut into squares and fried in roughly equal parts of butter and sugar until candied. It never works out the same for me because I am never sure of the ingredients ratio but the kids always love it! It is delicious with pureed apricots or other fruit for a healthier meal.

P.S. Schmarm is Mum's name for this. Do you know of any other?

Happy days!

Actually, it's more like cold days but I didn't know what else to call the post. I guess if you live in Europe or the Americas you don't think 5 or 6 degrees celcius in the night and 18 or 20 in the day to be cold but here on the New South Wales mid north coast we think it is almost freezing. And we can soon expect even colder days and nights. So in order to stop our little bit of heat escaping out the lounge room windows I have decided to make some curtains. Of course, they won't be lined or anything but they will be a barrier of sorts and also keep nosey neighbours eyes out at night.

So far this what I have come up with. I visited our local curtain shop and picked up 5 metres of lovely fabric for a mere $10. Everything else I needed to completed these curtains was at home so I was delighted with them. I still am but now I realise that when they are pulled across they have no fullness. Well, what can a girl do but spend another huge $10 and get 10 metres instead of 5. That's what I should have done in the first place but it wasn't garage sale day when I made my first buy. Today I have to cut them out and sew them up and I can't think of anything worse to do, however I will because we have visitors tomorrow evening. Hopefully they will look good enough to show you soon.

Do you like my new picture? It is just what I needed to fill that last space in our living area above the dining table.

And this is how much it cost!! How could I possibly say no!

O and one more bag. It doesn't look great in this picture because it is already wrinkled from use but I just love it - so much so that I am not going to share it with anyone else but you, even though the handles are just a tad too short to be really comfortable.

Moving along slowly

Well, daughter number one has gone home. We miss her but realise that her life is now in Melbourne so it was absolutely great to have the time together that we did. While she was with us,both girls managed to get bargains on little cameras. So far I have only managed to get one camera bag made. It is not a great job but is padded enough to hopefully protect the camera from any thing. The inside is faux velvet to help it slide in and out easily (I hope).

I used the tutorial from http://sew-mad.blogspot.com/ as a basis but as I only had half an hour to make it I wasn't very precise. The outer fabric is part of a chemise top I bought for $5 simply so I could cut it up to make a bag. When daughter number one was sorting through my stash she found it and admired it. It isn't really linen - totally fake - but it still has a lovely look about it.

And here's the reason for the heading. I am slowly moving along with my little mosaic sign. I've never done anything like this before so I really am feeling my way. I thought it would be a good idea to protect the wood from moisture so I undercoated it with acrylic sealer.

Then I worked out the sizing of the letters on a piece of baking paper. It was transferred using the old school method of rubbing the back with grey lead and tracing hard on the front.

Here is a little friend dropping in at the front porch to say hello!
